What's come as a gut punch to many who are anticipating the return of Joss Whedon to television, WarnerMedia on Tuesday announced that The Nevers will premiere on HBO Max in 2021.
That is not a typo and your eyesight is just fine. WarnerMedia/HBO will not be gifting us Joss Whedon's The Nevers for another year and a half - possibly two years (depending on when in 2021 it's released!)
When it was announced back in July 2018 that HBO had ordered The Nevers straight to series, little was known about the project. It's about "a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world,” was the official summarization provided at the time. Very little else, such as the creatives behind the scenes, actors and of course a release date, was known.
But when information such as the commencement of filming beginning in the first half of 2019 began to trickle in, a fourth quarter 2020 release date for the series seemed feasible (principal photography on episode one ultimately began in July and wrapped in late August.) And with the standard episode count for most of HBO sci-fi/fantasy drama's being ten, many people concluded that The Nevers could indeed make an Autumn 2020 release date.
So it came as a shock to everyone when WarnerMedia announced (and Variety tweeted) during it's presentation on Tuesday that The Nevers wouldn't premiere in 2020 as envisioned, but rather 2021 on HBO Max.
Series lead Laura Donnelly (aka Amalia True,) took to Twitter to also share the news:
We try to keep things as professional as we can in these parts, but this really does hurt. The Nevers is one of the most earnest and most exciting television projects in a very long time to really catch my interest - and to intrigue me in the way that it has! My fandom for Whedon aside, The Nevers is unlike anything we've seen from a live-action television series (save Game of Thrones?) Having to wait this long ... it really is crushing.
Now, is it possible that The Nevers will premiere on regular HBO television screens in 2020 and then be added to HBO Max in 2021? Sure, it's possible. It's also possible that in the coming weeks, 20th Century Fox (or is it now Disney?) will announce that it's green-lit another three seasons of Firefly, two more of Dollhouse and a major motion picture of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with all of the original cast! In other words: it's not very likely.
No word yet on which quarter of 2021 The Nevers will be premiere in. A Spring or Autumn release date seems likely, but who knows anything anymore! The world has been turned on its head! Nothing makes sense! Donald Trump is president! What's happening?!
The struggle is real ladies and gentleman, but we'll get through it together.
HBO Max launches in May 2020.
